Oregon Wildfire Relief

Oregon Department of Insurance Response to Wildfires

In response to recent wildfires, the Governor of Oregon proclaimed a statewide state of emergency. Subsequently, the Department of Insurance issued a Wildlife Emergency Order which suspends certain provisions of the Oregon Insurance Code, including those related to cancellation, nonrenewal, premium payment, and claim filings.

The Order is directed to all admitted insurers that provide any type of insurance coverage in the state, including property, casualty, and all other lines of insurance, excluding flood insurance issued pursuant to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The Order is applicable to insureds located in the zip codes listed in Bulletin 2020-16, is retroactively effective to September 18, 2020, and continues in full force and effect until 11:59 p.m. on October 17, 2020, unless otherwise extended.

The relief granted through the Order is intended to provide relief for insureds in affected areas whose lives have been disrupted by displacement from homes, closing of businesses, temporary loss of employment, and interruption in mail and communication services. This directive does not remove the insured’s obligation to pay premiums; instead, it limits policy cancellations for late payment.
